Life Outside Sac State

If you have time and are new to the area, there are several places that you must go and see. The first on my list is Lake Tahoe. The scenery is great, and there are a lot of fun things to do such as ski/snowboard, go to the casinos, and/or take a hike around the lake. Another great place to go is San Francisco. So many of the students at Sac State are from the Bay Area, or are from surrounding communities. However if you are not one of them it is a great place to go. If you are not familiar with the city, I would recommend going to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf for the great food, shopping, or just kicking around and sight seeing.
My most favorite place to go for food is Fat’s Asian Bistro in Roseville. The food is outstanding, and the atmosphere is great for going out with friends. It is also relatively inexpensive. (I recommend their honey walnut prawns if you enjoy shrimp).
Although it is the off-season, a fun event to go to in Sacramento is a River Cat’s game. The tickets are cheaper than going to see the Giants and it is just across the river from Sac State. I would definitely recommend going to a game if you have not done so already.

Getting Involved: What I’ve done, what you can do, and why it is important.

I have chosen to get involved over the past four years in several ways. During my first year at Sac State I lived in the dorms, so I joined an intramural basketball team and participated in other dorm activities. Since then I have chosen to volunteer in political activities and in programs here at school. As well as being a student ambassador, I have also chosen to be an undergrad pre-business student advisor in the UBAC. I encourage students to get involved in any school-related activity they possibly can. It is important not only for personal growth, but for your future as a student or business professional. Doing extra curricular activities looks very good on a resume, and can also lead to more interesting experiences in the future. If you are counting on your grades alone to get you in to a good grad school, or land you that job you’ve always wanted, I would advise you to rethink your plan and add in other activities such as volunteer work, an internship, or a fellowship.

What I Wish I Knew...Advice for new Busines Majors

When I was in my first year as a business student at Sac State, I wish I knew about all of the programs that were not part of everyday class. I would advise all freshmen business students to get involved in school programs and activities outside of the classroom. Particularly for those students who wish to pursue an advanced degree after undergrad, I would encourage these students to get involved in an internship or fellowship program. The experience of doing and internship or a fellowship can be a great learning experience, and will certainly look good on a résumé.
I would also advise students to go and talk to their professors during office hours. This is a great opportunity to get to know your professors, and let them get to know you. It will also leave a good lasting impression about you on your professor’s mind. Going to the office hours will show interest on your part, and this is what professors like most about students. Your professor will view you as a more dedicated learner, and you will also stand out as someone who took the course seriously. Although going and seeing your professor will not guarantee you a high grade, it will definitely help.
